My Teaching Philosophy

Building Strong Foundations

I believe that every great violinist starts with solid fundamentals. My face-to-face teaching allows me to closely observe and correct posture, bow technique, and intonation in real-time. Being physically present means I can make immediate adjustments and provide hands-on guidance that makes all the difference.

Making Music Enjoyable

Learning violin should be a joyful experience! In the comfort of your own home, I create a relaxed atmosphere where you can focus on making music. I incorporate pieces you love alongside classical studies, ensuring that every lesson is engaging and motivating. From Celtic folk tunes to movie soundtracks, we'll explore music that inspires you.

Comfortable Learning Environment

There's something special about learning in your own space. Students often feel more relaxed and confident at home, leading to faster progress and greater enjoyment. Plus, family members can observe and support your musical journey, creating a wonderful shared experience.

Violin & Bow

Any size violin appropriate for your age. I can recommend good rental or purchase options if you don't have one yet, and help with setup.

Suitable Space

A quiet room with enough space to hold and play the violin comfortably. I'll work with whatever space you have available.

Music Stand

A music stand or table to hold your sheet music. I can bring a portable stand if needed for the first few lessons.

Seating

A straight-backed chair for proper posture. Kitchen or dining chairs work perfectly - no special furniture needed.

Regular Lesson Time

Consistency helps with progress. We'll find a regular weekly time that works for your schedule and family routine.

Enthusiasm

Most importantly, bring your passion for music! I'll provide all the guidance, encouragement, sheet music, and expertise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need any experience to start?

Not at all! I welcome complete beginners and will guide you through every step, from holding the violin correctly to playing your first songs.

Which areas do you cover?

I travel throughout Oxfordshire and surrounding areas for home visits. Contact me to confirm if I cover your location - I'm often able to accommodate new areas.

What ages do you teach?

I teach students from age 6 to 95+! My teaching style adapts to different age groups and learning preferences, from young children to adults.

Can I reschedule lessons?

Yes! I understand life happens. Just give me 24 hours notice and we can reschedule your lesson to another time that works for both of us.

Do you provide sheet music?

Absolutely! I bring all sheet music, method books, and practice materials to your lesson. Everything is included in the lesson fee.

How often should I practice?

I recommend 15-30 minutes daily for beginners, building up as you progress. I'll show family members how to help with practice between lessons.
